About the Team
In 2005 Andy and Esther began an 11 month trip driving from London to Cape-Town. It was an amazing experience which touched them both. But throughout the trip they became increasingly conscious of the emissions their 4x4 produced and the irony of emitting greenhouse gases to visit stunning landscapes.
So in 2007 Andy set out to see if biofuels could provide a sustainable way of travelling long distances, by driving a “Chocolate Powered Lorry” to Timbuktu, completing an 8500km overland journey from the UK powered entirely by biodiesel made from waste cocoa butter. Thanks to a number of offsetting schemes it was the world’s first carbon negative expedition.
Then in August 2008 Andy and Esther organised and set off on the Grease to Greece rally, an event for 10 cars driving from the UK to Athens, fuelled only by waste vegetable oil that teams scavenged from restaurants along the route.
Now the duo are preparing for their most ambitious journey yet.
Andy is a former Engineer, turned Award Winning Journalist, turned businessman and adventurer. His unique combination of skills and experience make him ideally suited organise successful eco-expeditions and generate a high profile media interest.
Esther is a Chemistry teacher at one of the UK’s leading schools. Her scientific background and skills at communicating and educating have allowed her to share her experiences and insight into eco-travel.
Steve Couri, the Australian environmental documentary maker will also be joining the team and they will also be joined by other team members for sections of the journey that will bring expertise in everything from energy usage to local regions.
